Appleby, Joseph 'Ernie'
Joseph “Ernie” Appleby, 72, died Monday, Dec. 23, 2013, at Silvercrest of Anamosa following a sudden illness. Funeral Services will be noon Saturday, Jan. 11, at Goettsch Funeral Home, Monticello, where friends may call after 9 a.m. The Rev. Al Polito will officiate the services. A luncheon will be held at the Monticello Veterans Hall following the services.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
Surviving are two daughters, Tammy (Matt) Brown and Trish (Jon Avenarius) Tuetken; two grandchildren, Jennifer and Todd; two sisters, Janet (Tom) Mai and Judy (Bob) Kaune, all of Monticello; and three brothers, Jerry (Ruth) Appleby, Fort Walton Beach, Fla., Junior (Suzie) Appleby, Wichita Kan., and Jeffrey Appleby, Monticello.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Donna; a son, Tim; two sisters, Joanne as an infant and Jeraldine Milroy; and three brothers, Lee Roy "Red," Jack and Jim.
Joseph Ernest Appleby was born Aug. 26, 1941, in Monticello, Iowa, the son of John A. and Josephine Rigby Appleby. Ernie married Donna Underwood on Oct. 17, 1959, at Hopkinton United Methodist Church. The couple made their home in Monticello.
Ernie was employed at Iowa Manufacturing, the Howard Hall estate, Chapman Logging as a logger and truck driver. He was also an owner operator of a semi and two-manned it with his son, Tim. When he retired from semi driving he worked for Truck Country and delivered parts all over the area.
Ernie was a member of the Monticello Conservation League and Worthington Sportsman's Club.
When Tim was little he helped coach Little League.
