Gene T. Gulrud, 81, of Cedar Rapids, passed away Friday, June 13, 2014, at his home with family by his side. A memorial service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 18, at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories in Cedar

Rapids. Burial will be at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be at Cedar Memorial Park Cha-pel of Memories two hours before the service.

Gene Thomas Gulrud was born Nov. 27, 1932, son of Reuben and Doris (Barth) Gulrud, in Waukon, Iowa. He attended school in Allamakee County. Gene married Irene Berge on March 3, 1952. They later divorced. Gene was drafted into the Army in 1953. He was stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., and also was stationed in Germany. He was honorably discharged on Nov. 21, 1955.

Gene worked for Winneshiek County road crew, Holland Brothers Construction, Blattner Construction and Gee Construction until his retirement. Gene married Cecilia Kennedy on Jan. 1, 1998, in Anamosa.

To his friends and co-workers he was known as "Juicy."

Gene loved hunting, fishing, the outdoors, stock car racing, playing cards, his birds, Joey and Petey, an occasional trip to the casino and a good joke.

Gene is survived by his wife, Cecilia; his eight children, Karen (Phil) Kennedy of Burlington, Ill., Debbie (Jon) Aske of Decorah, Michel Gulrud of Dyersville, Garry (LeAnn) Gulrud, LeAnn (Richard) Geiselhart, David (Heather) Gulrud, Doreen (Kevin) Bidne and Denise (Jim) Bruening, all of Decorah; stepdaughters, Liane (Randy) Kennedy and Gloria Kennedy, both of Cedar Rapids; stepson, Everett (Rhonda) Kennedy of Manchester; 18 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren and three stepgreat-grand-children.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Reuben Gulrud and Doris Buege; and grandparents, Clara and Michael Barth and John and Anna Gulrud.
