Charles B. Sumner, 81, of Vinton, formerly of Newhall, died Thursday, June 5, 2014, at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids after a short illness. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday, June 9, at St. John Lutheran Church in Newhall, officiated by the Rev. Steven W. Rempfer. Visitation will take place from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at St. John Lutheran Church. Interment, with military honors, will take place at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Memorial donations may be directed to St. John Lutheran Church.

Charles was born Nov. 7, 1932, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to Charles Newell and Anna (Blackstone) Sumner. He served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean conflict. He was united in marriage to Barbara Butterfield on Nov. 23, 1957, in Denver, Colo. He worked in the shipping department at Quaker Oats until his retirement in 1997, and was a member of Cereal Workers Union Local 110.
Charles was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, where he enjoyed serving as a greeter. After his retirement, he and Barb travelled the United States in their RV (Wiki) and spent their winters in Texas. They had visited all 50 states. He also loved to hunt and fish and he enjoyed woodworking.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara; son, Charles "Stoney" (Sherry) Sumner of Newhall; son, Carl "Brad" (Karen) Sumner of Omro, Wis.; daughter, Colleen (Terry) Holland of Watkins; four grandchildren, Cody Sumner of Vinton, Nikolas Sumner of Newhall, Zachery Bray of Cedar Rapids and Dakota Bray of Tucson, Ariz.; and brother, Edward (Janet) Sumner of Cedar Rapids.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Helen McVay, Phyllis Bruner and Vivan Pyle; and two brothers, Robert and Jerald Sumner.
