Mary D. Cosman, 90, of Marion, passed away Monday, June 16, 2014, at The Villages at Marion. Per Mary's wishes, a private family funeral service will be held at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories with an entombment following in the mausoleum.
Mary Cosman was born in 1923, to parents who were Greek immigrants. Graduating from the Rochester School of Nursing in the late 1940s, she moved to Los Angeles, Calif. It was an amazing time to be on the West Coast! In her career she gave medicine to Clark Gable while he was in the hospital in the early 60s, and turned down dinner with Buddy Hackett in the 1970s, (while waiting for her car in a muffler shop). She also regaled her nephews and nieces with stories such as the time actress Betty White came to her workplace for a filming. What a great time to be in Los Angeles, Calif., in a long varied life!
Mary was a distinct personality to our family and will be forever cherished for her aunt qualities in taking her family to all the California hotspots in the 60s and 70s, including Disneyland, Knotts Berry Farm, Pacific Palisades, Griffith Observatory, Sea World of California and the Los Angeles Zoo, to name a few. She always had time during summer vacations for her family to come visit sunny southern California, from the cold confines of Iowa, and the family roots she moved from. She was loved and will be missed by all of us who were lucky to call her Aunt Mary.
Survivors include her nephew, Daniel K. Cosman and wife Cris of Marion; nieces, Denise Yochum and Pamela Cosman; sister-in-law, Verda Cosman all of Cedar Rapids; great-nephews, Joshua and wife Bethanie (great-great-niece Gwendolyn) of Nashville, Tenn., Cory Cosman of Marion, Jason Beauregard (Rachel) and James Yochum; and great-great-nieces, Sarah and Mariska, all of Cedar Rapids.
The family extends special appreciation and thanks to Hospice of Mercy, Hospice Compassus and all the fine people at the Villages of Marion who made Mary's later years happy. Thanks are also given to her friends at First United Methodist Church in Marion, where she enjoyed playing dominos.
