Carew, Shirley Makepeace
Shirley Makepeace Carew passed away Saturday, Dec. 21, 2013, at Oaknoll Retirement Residence in Iowa City.
She was born on Sept. 21, 1927, in Billerica, Mass., to Arthur and Marjorie Makepeace. Shirley attended high school in Monson, Mass., and earned her RN at Lowell General Hospital. On Sept. 3, 1951, she married her high school sweetheart, David Carew. They lived in Boston and Connecticut while Dave pursued his undergraduate degree and doctorate in pharmacy. In 1957 Dave and Shirley moved to Iowa City where Dave joined the College of Pharmacy faculty. Dave and Shirley recently celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary.
In addition to her endless devotion to her family, volunteer work was a large part of Shirley's life. She was a volunteer for Iowa City Hospice, the Old Capitol gift shop and Mercy Hospital. Shirley was an avid bridge player, gourmet cook, and gardener. Knitting needles and yarn were seldom out of her sight, and many people were the recipients of her beautifully knit works of art. Shirley and Dave were able to share their love of travel for many years.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; and brother, Howard Makepeace. She is survived by her husband, David; daughter, Susan (Jud) Te Paske of Memphis, Tenn.; sons, Bruce (Peggy) Carew of Greenville, Wis., and Steven (Diane) Carew of Adel, Iowa; grandchildren, Neal Te Paske, Brooklyn, N.Y., David Carew, Greenville, Wis., Sarah Carew, Greenville, Wis., Russell Carew, Ankeny, Iowa, and Brian Carew, Adel, Iowa; and great-grandchildren, Melody, Kamryn, and Bailey Carew.
A celebration of Shirley's life will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2013, at the First Congregational Church in Iowa City. Visitation will occur from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Iowa City Hospice, 1025 Wade Street, Iowa City, IA 52240, or online at IowaCityHospice.org.
