Vaneta Mae Kester, 87, of Manchester, died at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester on Friday, Jan. 3, 2014.
She was born Feb. 21, 1926, the daughter of Louis and Cora (Jepsen) Wall. After receiving her high school diploma at Central City, she earned an emergency teaching certificate at Iowa State Teachers' College, now the University of Northern Iowa, in Cedar Falls. She taught in a one-room schoolhouse near Central City.
Vaneta was united in marriage to Louis Kester on June 14, 1949, in Central City. Together they began farming near Coggon and then bought a farm south of Lamont in the spring of 1956. They continued farming until 1983, when they retired to Manchester.
Vaneta loved reading, gardening, sewing, crocheting, cooking, baking and cake decorating. She loved her family, nature, flowers and life. Vaneta was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church. Family was her life, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Her survivors include her six children, Gary (Pam) Kester of San Diego, Calif., Janet( Roger) Miersen of Marion, Virginia Kester of Dillon, Colo., Jim Kester of Lake Havasu, Ariz., Diane (Mick Pingel) Kester of Austin, Texas, and John (Kristi) Kester of Cedar Rapids; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; her sister, Viola (John) Kerr, Rochester, Minn.; her brother, Albion (Maxine) Wall, Cedar Rapids; two sisters-in-law, Georgia Wall, Oklahoma City, Okla., and Dora Wall, Central City; and many nieces and nephews.
Vaneta was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Louis on Nov. 14, 2012; and four brothers, Glenn, Floyd, Raymond and Charles Wall.
