William Eugene "Bill"
Sherman, 87, of Marion,
formerly of Alburnett, died Sunday, June 1, 2014. Memorial service: 11 a.m. Thursday, June 5, at the Alburnett United Methodist Church by the Rev. Jon Moss. The family will greet friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 4, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion. Private family inurnment: Lafayette Cemetery in rural Alburnett.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Dorothy; children, Ken (Rosie) Sherman of Blue Grass, Gene Sherman of Marion, Helen (Dave) Franklin of Weiser, Idaho, Richard (Kay) Sherman of Searcy, Ark., and Keith (Stacey) Sherman of Des Moines; eight grandchildren, Val, Jason, Jennifer, April Marie, Erica, April Lynn, Matthew and Cray; six great-grandchildren, Elaine, Oliver, Elizabeth, Ryan, Morgan and Maryea; and siblings, Harold Sherman of Robins, Marvin Sherman of Wilton, Marlene Porter of Prather, Calif., and Betty Hiers of Lugoff, S.C.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Elaine Bringman; and his grandson, Brent Sherman.
Bill was born May 24, 1927, in Marion, Iowa, to Emery Willson and Mabel Florence (Kimes) Sherman. He graduated from Alburnett High School in 1944 and served with the U.S. Army during World War II. After serving his country, Bill returned home and married Dorothy May Stimson on Feb. 20, 1949, in Troy Mills. Together they had five children.
Bill farmed for over 20 years and then established his own plumbing, backhoe and electrical business, Sherman's Service. His
hobbies included tent
camping, square dancing, woodworking and feeding the squirrels. Bill was a longtime member of the Alburnett Lion's Club, the Alburnett Historical Society and the Alburnett United Methodist Church.
