Bette Engebretson, resident of Sun City, Ariz., died Wednesday, May 21, 2014.
She was born Elizabeth Jean McGuire on Feb. 3, 1922, to Wm. A. and Ruth Easterly McGuire in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Bette graduated from Mount Mercy Academy in 1939. She married Phil Engebretson Oct. 24, 1942. He preceded her in death in 2006.
Before moving to Sun City, they lived in Rock Island, Ill., where she was employed at Bituminous Ins. Co. for 22 years.
While in Sun City, both Bette and Phil were avid golfers. They did some traveling and Bette did volunteer work at Boswell Hospital, Sun Valley Lodge Care Center and the Recording Services for the Blind.
Besides her husband she was preceded in death by her parents; her son, James P.; her sister, Margaret; and two brothers, William and James.
Bette is survived by her daughter, Sandra, and granddaughter, Kate E., both of San Diego, Calif. Also surviving are sister-in-law, Mae McGuire; 10 nieces and two nephews.
A memorial Mass will be held in late fall. Burial will be in Hazel Green, Wis.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joachim and St. Anne Church, Sun Valley Care Center in Sun City or a charity of choice.
