Surviving are two daughters, Elaine Huerter (Lou Molnar) of Tampa, Fla., and Carlene (Don) Hooley of Bradenton, Fla.; grandson Mark (Martha) Bailey of Seminole, Fla.; great-grandson Alan Bailey; a twin sister, Lorrenne Mulherin of Cedar Rapids; and a half brother, Verne Meeks of Fort Wayne, Ind.
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; three brothers; and one sister.
Lorraine Marie Young was born July 3, 1928, in Cedar Rapids. She was the daughter of George J. and Florence (Stark) Young. Lorraine attended high school in Palo, Iowa. She was actively involved in Linn County 4-H where she was crowned 4-H Achievement Queen. She also had champion Angus calves and was the first woman to win grand champion at the All Iowa Fair.
She married Elmer L. Huerter Oct. 30, 1948, in Fairfax, Iowa, and they moved to Anamosa where they owned and operated Huerter's DairyAna Drive-In in the 1950s, which turned into a local "hot spot" for people of all ages with good food, fun and laughter. Huerter's DairyAna Drive-In also sponsored a fast-pitch softball team where Lorraine played first and second base. The team was consisted of young women that either worked at the drive-in or just had a love for softball, like Lorraine. They also owned and operated Huerter's Christmas Tree Sales from where fresh Christmas trees, wreaths and roping were found in most local homes, businesses and churches.
Many people, even today, mention the good memories of growing up in Anamosa and remember the hard work and determination that Lorraine had to make everything she did the best it could be.
After retirement the couple moved to Florida where she worked as the produce manager at Orange Blossom Groves in St. Petersburg, Fla., for over 20 years.
As her family and many friends well know, Lorraine was a strong woman. Her work was her joy and satisfaction and what she took pride in. From opening the DairyAna Drive-In in her 20s to being the "project manager" in her 80s with family projects she wanted so much to be a part of, she was always there and wanted to be involved. She loved her family and was always there for them. She was the best mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend and will be missed dearly by those closest to her.
