Richard L. Lindenmayer, 91, of Marengo, died Monday, Dec. 22, 2014, at Marengo Memorial Hospital. Graveside memorial services: 3 p.m. Friday, Jan. 2, at the Marengo Cemetery, with the Rev. Andrew Gray officiating. Military honors will be conducted by Marengo American Legion Post 76 and the U.S. Navy Honor Guard. Following the service, the family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo.
A memorial fund has been established.
Richard Lorenz Lindenmayer was born June 4, 1923, in Marengo, the son of Ernest and Lila Smith Lindenmayer. He graduated in May 1941 from Marengo High School and spent the next year working for his father at the Lindenmayer grocery store. Richard began work for the U.S. post office the following year, enlisting in the Navy on Jan. 13, 1943. He was discharged Jan. 28, 1946, which was three years and 15 days to the hour of his enlistment.
Richard married Bonita Fruendt in Lincoln Township near Victor, Iowa, on Oct. 20, 1946. He returned to work at the U.S. post office in Marengo and was a city carrier, transferring to a rural route, and retiring in 1979 after 37 1/2 years of government service.
During his retirement, he began woodturning and made many beautiful pieces for his family and friends. He also made wooden signs large and small for area businesses and churches.
Richard was a member of the Quad City Woodturners, Corridor Woodturners and the American Association of Woodturners. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Marengo, American Legion Post 76 and the VFW.
For many years, Richard drove a school bus for Iowa Valley Com-munity Schools, trans-porting students to and from home and for many activities.
He was a lifelong resident of Marengo until November 2010, when he moved to Highland Ridge in Williamsburg.
Richard is survived by three children, Suzanne (David) Riherd of Belle Plaine, William (Skipper) Lindenmayer of LaSalle, Colo., and June Linden-mayer of Steamboat Springs, Colo.; a granddaughter, Lisa (Trevor) Andersen of North Liberty; three grandsons, Darin Riherd of Belle Plaine, Brad Lindenmayer of Perkins, Okla., and Brian Lindenmayer of Hauppauge, N.Y.; four great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Bonnie Lindenmayer of Marengo; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Bonita; his parents, and a brother, Fred Lindenmayer.
