Vivian Lorraine Norden died peacefully Monday, Jan. 26, 2015, in Iowa City at age 91. Services will be 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids. Family will greet
friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 29, at the funeral home. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
She is survived by her sister, Doris Volosin (Clermont, Fla.); children, Linda Hertzler (Iowa City), Alan and Jean Norden (Iowa City), Marcia Dorie (St. Helens, Ore.), and Barbara Selland (Tacoma, Wash.); grandsons, Dylan Norden, Todd Norden, Trent Norden, Nicholas Bierman, John Towne Jr., Beau Towne, Sean Towne, Royce Mahoney and Grant Mahoney; and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Rose Brown; husband, Alfred Norden; daughters, Cynthia Norden and Deborah Mahoney; sisters, Ethel Reed and Norma Syzmanski; brother, LuVerne Brown; sister-in-law, Shirley Brown; and grand-daughter, Erika Hertzler.
Vivian was born Nov. 22, 1923, in Highland, Minn., later growing up in Burr Oak, Iowa, and graduating from Decorah High School. She worked as a telephone operator and at the Rock Island Arsenal during World War II. Vivian met and married Alfred W. Norden, becoming a homemaker for a family with six rowdy kids. She was sweet by nature and loved to dance.
