Frances Arlene Burrows, 97, of La Porte City, died Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2014, at La Porte City Nursing and Rehab Center.
She was born Dec. 14, 1916, on the Struve farm in
Benton County, the daughter of Ralph and Dorothy Hains Struve. She was a 1934 graduate of Mount Auburn High School. She married Glenn J. Burrows on Aug. 7, 1935, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. He preceded her in death June 25, 2010.
She and her husband farmed most of their lives, purchasing their own farm near Brandon in 1956. They were dedicated conser-vation farmers. Through their conservation work, she was president of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Soil and Water Conser-vation of eight states, was secretary of Conservation and elected Women of the Year over the eight states in 1986. In 1976, they retired and purchased 10 acres and made a lake where they built their home and resided until moving to La Porte City in 1999.
Surviving are two daughters, Sharon Burrows of Stone City and Marilyn Spores of Tallahassee, Fla.; a grand-daughter, Kerry (Dan) Solomon of Cedar Rapids; and a grandson, Jamison Spores of Urbandale.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a daughter, Glenda Burrows; two sisters, Lois Miller and Donna Becker; and a brother, Roger Struve Sr.
Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, at St. Paul United Methodist Church, with burial in West View Cemetery, both in La Porte City. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church.
Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice.
