Nellie Ester Slaton, 92, of Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2015, at Living Center West, Cedar Rapids. Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, at First Church of the Open Bible, Cedar Rapids, conducted by the Rev. Dan Sanford. Family will greet friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids. Burial Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include her children, Vernon "Earl" (Dot) Slaton of Cedar Rapids, Bobby (Betty) Slaton of Cedar Rapids, Wanda (Chuck) Church of Cedar Rapids, Gail (Don) Finn of Cedar Rapids, Judie (Scott) Phillips of Cedar Rapids and Carol (Sharon) Slaton of Stanwood; daughter-in-law, Pam Slaton of Cedar Rapids; 25 grandchildren; 71 great-grandchildren; 23 great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Freddie Luttrell of Sturgis, Ky.; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Basil; son, Donnie; five sisters and four brothers.
Nellie was born Feb. 5, 1922, in Hopkins County, Ky., daughter of Vernon and Elizabeth (Burden) Luttrell. She was a LPN at Davis County Hospital for 24 years and later at Green Square Nursing Home for 20 years.
Nellie was a member of First Church of the Open Bible. She was a homemaker and quilter for the past many years.
