J. Lynn Stoll, 73, of rural Atalissa, died Monday, Dec. 29, 2014, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. Funeral services will be 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 2, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. There will be a time of visitation one hour before the service and a time of fellowship following the service at the funeral home.

A memorial fund will be established through the University of Iowa Foundation to be used to support women in science.

Dr. Judith "Lynn" Stoll was born April 4, 1941, in Pittsburgh, Pa., the only child of John "Jack" and Ruth Lockard. Lynn was awarded a merit scholarship and chose to attend the University of Connecticut, where she graduated magna cum laude and a membership into Phi Beta Kappa. She earned a double bachelor's degree – one in music from the School of Fine Arts and one in art from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. She was a University Scholar on both of these degrees.

After she graduated, she decided she wanted to continue to study voice, so if she was going to become a world class operatic soprano, then she would have to study at the best school of music. That is when she moved to New York City to study with the head of the vocal department for the Julliard School of Music as a private student. To help pay for all of this she worked in a lab as a laboratory assistant. At this time she met the love of her life, her husband of 48 years, Barrett Stoll. They made beautiful music all over New York and then they went on to Europe.

Lynn had the honor of singing in Bach's Church in Leipzig, Germany, and the Notre dame de Paris cathedral.

Lynn came with Barry out to the wilds of Iowa in the summer of 1967. She started working at the University of Iowa in the biochemistry department. As a cell biologist, she worked in many different departments over the many years that she worked for the university. Some of her favorites departments were infectious disease and emergency medicine research, but her biggest success was in cardiovascular research.

She was a highly published researcher with least 40 medical journal publications. She had the honor of winning the 1987 Spiestersbach Award for the best dissertation in the biological sciences at the University of Iowa. Then she proceeded to take fourth place in a national competition against schools like Harvard and Yale for the same dissertation.

Lynn had another passion – a passion for beautiful things, whether it was a beautiful piece of jewelry, artwork, the beauty of wild large cats, or watching a flower opening for the first time. Lynn's passion for beauty and science commingled in her home, where she had a half acre garden of daylilies and hostas. It is an American Hemerocallis Society (AHS) Display Garden.

She was a charter member of the Cedar Valley Iris and Daylily Society. She also was a very active member of AHS Region 1, having held numerous board positions and publishing many articles in the Daylily Journal and regional newsletter, the Pioneer.

She was preceded in death by both her parents and her aunt, Flor.

She is survived by her loving husband, Barrett, and many esteemed friends and colleagues.
