Vinton J. "Red" Margretz, 88, of Hiawatha, died Sunday, Jan. 18, 2015, at Living Center East in Cedar Rapids. Funeral services, with military rites: 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 22, at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories, Cedar Rapids, with Cedar Memorial Celebrant Paula Meyer officiating. Entombment will be in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday at the chapel.
Survivors include his wife, Tamae; daughter, Genevieve Margretz of Texas; sister, Wilma Kibler of Hiawatha; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Paul; and four sisters, Wanda Cook, Joan Tank, Jane Morris and Norma Taylor.
Vinton was born April 23, 1926, in Waterloo, Iowa, the son of Glenn and Pauline Craft Margretz. He married Tamae Kimura on Oct. 14, 1979, in Reno, Nev. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the U.S. Air Force during the Korean conflict. He was a member of VFW Post 788 and Local Union No. 447. He worked for Broulik Construction as a painter for many years. In his younger years, he enjoyed drawing and working with woodcrafts.
