Funeral services for Joan Elizabeth Meyer, 77, formerly of Greene, will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 5, 2015, at the United Methodist Church in Greene. Burial: Rose Hill Cemetery, Greene. Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Jan. 4, at Retz Funeral Home, 519 N. First St., Greene. Prayer service at 7 p.m.
Joan Elizabeth Crooks was born Sept. 19, 1937, in rural Greene, the daughter of Samuel Leo and Alice (Menken) Crooks, and passed away Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2014, at the Windmill Manor, Coralville.
She received her education in country school, graduating from Greene High School in 1955. Joan worked as a nurse's aide at the Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City.
Joan was united in marriage on Feb. 24, 1957, to Harold Meyer from Aplington at the United Methodist Church in Greene.
Joan loved living on the farm and all the wildlife. She enjoyed the annual trips to Gays Mills, Wis. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting and other crafts. Joan cherished time spent with her family, especially her grandchildren. Joan was proud that all her children received college degrees, something she was never able to do.
She was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church in Greene.
Joan is survived by her husband of 57 years, Harold Meyer of North Liberty; children, Deb Meyer of Indianapolis, Ind., David (Cathy) Meyer of Flower Mound, Texas, Jolyn (Al) Morgan, North Liberty, and Renae Meyer of Coralville; four grandchildren, Erik Nelson, Jessica and Yaxuan Meyer and Andrea Morgan; siblings, Ruth (Allan) Jacobson of Cedar Falls, Ronald (Bev) Crooks of La Porte City and Barbara (Robert) Lee of Rochester, Minn.; sisters-in-law, Esther Schipper of Parkersburg, Paulene Meyer of Allison and Arlene Steinmeyer of Grundy Center; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
