John Daniel Griess was born April 13, 1958, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the son of Theo and BettyLou (Haas) Griess. He passed away Saturday, Aug. 12, 2017, at his home at the age of 59 years.
John graduated from Amana High School in 1976 and attended the University of Iowa. He was united in marriage to Julie Lynn Van Cleave on Aug. 8, 1981, at Middle Amana Church. He was employed by Centro Inc. in North Liberty.
John enjoyed shopping, collecting, flea markets, golfing and hunting (geese and ducks), and was an avid fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes, Chicago Bears and Chicago White Sox. He enjoyed traveling and spending time with his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Julie, of Williamsburg; a son, Connor of North Liberty; a brother, Lewis Griess of Cedar Rapids; two sisters, his twin, Joanne Griess, and Marie Griess, both of Amana; and a number of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a nephew, Thaddeus Logan Griess.
Celebration of Life visitation will be Tuesday, Aug. 15, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home in Williamsburg. Burial will be Wednesday, Aug. 16, at 11 a.m. at Amana Cemetery in Amana.
Memorials are for Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center or Safe Haven of Iowa County.
