John Joseph Phelps, 70, of Cedar Rapids, died Friday, June 30, 2017, at Mercy Medical Center. Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday at Teahen Funeral Home by the Rev. Kenneth J. Glaser. Burial: St. Patrick Cemetery, Fairfax. Friends may visit with the family after 10 a.m. at the funeral home.
John is survived by his son, Curtis (Rachel Ashline) of Marion; and many nieces and nephews.
John was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Tom and Jim Phelps.
John was born Dec. 25, 1946, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Hugh and Irene Wickey Phelps. He graduated from Jefferson High School in 1965 and attended Kirkwood Community College. John served in the Navy from 1965 to 1969. He married Doris Kelchen in 1972. They later divorced. John worked for P&H Harnischfeger and the city of Cedar Rapids, retiring in 2009. He was a member of St. Ludmila Catholic Church.
John enjoyed antique cars, especially his 1956 Ford truck, and Lionel trains.
