Gregory R. Powell, 66, of St. Petersburg, Fla., formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2017, at Bay Pines VA Hospital, St. Petersburg.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, at Our Savior Lutheran Church, St. Petersburg. Dr. Paul Burtzlaff will officiate. Visitation is at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church.
Surviving are his wife, Patricia; children, Gregory G. Powell and Tatiana Perry; brother, Daryl Powell; and stepchildren, Matthew Ehler and Ruth Ehler.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Scott; and sister, Laura (Robert) Bartman.
Greg was born in Pottstown, Pa. He joined the Navy in 1969 during the Vietnam conflict and was trained as a cryptologic technician. He served 14 years before being medically discharged. He especially enjoyed his time serving on submarines.
Greg was very active in the VFW, both in Pennsylvania and at Post 788 in Cedar Rapids.
He married Patricia Marshall Ehler in 2011. They moved to Florida earlier this year in hopes that the climate would improve his health. He was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in St. Petersburg.
