Phyllis Marie Kuda, 90, of Cedar Rapids, died Sunday, Jan. 29, 2017, at West Ridge Care Center. Services: 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Jude Catholic Church by the Rev. Mark Reasoner. Burial: St. John Cemetery. A vigil service will be held Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Teahen Funeral Home, where friends may visit with the family Wednesday after the vigil service until 8 p.m. and Thursday after 9 a.m. at the church.
Phyllis was the mother to seven sons. Four sons and their children survive her, including Terry L. (Janet), and their children, Angela, Tara and Jessica; Rick D. (Mary), and daughter, Amber; Jeff A. (Sandy); and Dan J. (Julie), and their children, Jennifer and Jeremy; daughter-in-law, Monica, and children, Dillon, Kimberly, Aaron and Jeff, all of Cedar Rapids; 12 great-grandchildren; several stepgreat-grandchildren; a sister, Bernice Crowley of Texas; many nieces and nephews; and special friend, Floyd Ondler.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband of 38 years, William; three sons, William A. Jr., a stillborn; Jeffery Linn, who died at birth; and Kim A.; a sister, Helen Smith; two brothers, Merle and Howard DeShaw; and special friends, George Haines and James Smittkamp.
Phyllis was born the daughter of Phillip and Caroline Grief DeShaw on Feb. 28, 1926, in Hopkinton, on her family's farm. She graduated from Monticello High School in 1943 and attended Coe College. Phyllis taught school in rural Delaware and Dubuque counties before she married William A. Kuda on June 9, 1947, in Cedar Rapids. He died in 1985.
Phyllis and her husband were charter members of St. Jude Catholic Church. She also was a member of the VFW Auxiliary, Moose Lodge, Western Fraternal Lodge 262, Mother Cabrini Circle, New Leisure Group, All Church Singles and New Life Fitness.
Phyllis always had an angel on her shoulder, a smile on her face and was ready for a hug. Her family would agree and will miss the smiles and hugs.
Her family would like to thank the staff at West Ridge Care Center and Hospice of Mercy for the wonderful care that was given to Phyllis and to all of the friends and family who visited with her when she was at West Ridge.
Instead of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Jude Catholic Church or Camp Courageous.
