MAURICE "MAURY" BUCKSBAUM
Marshalltown
Maurice "Maury" Bucksbaum, 93, died in Boca Raton, Fla., on Thursday, Jan. 19, 2017. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 23, at Temple B'nai Jeshurun in Des Moines, followed by burial in Jewish Glendale Cemetery.
Maury was born and raised in Marshalltown, Iowa, to Ida and Louis Bucksbaum. He was a proud U.S. Army World War II veteran, serving as a sergeant in the China Burma India Theater. Coming out of the service, Maury returned to Marshalltown to work and expand the family grocery stores, as well as owning and running Barlow's Cafe, a popular local hangout. Maury married Dorothy Abramsohn in 1952, and they moved to Cedar Rapids in 1957 so Maury could work with his brothers to start and manage General Growth Properties, a real estate investment trust specializing in shopping centers. He also started and ran one of the first toy store chains, Toy Fair. They moved to Des Moines in 1971 and upon retirement, moved to Boca Raton, first part time and then permanently.
Maury was a lifelong avid golfer, a true lover of the game. Fishing was his second hobby, in Canada, Iowa rivers or behind his home in Florida. Maury had a heart of gold and befriended all who crossed his path. He was loved by all. A sweet and philanthropic man who always had a smile and a ready joke, he made the world better by his presence.
Maury was predeceased by his two brothers, Martin and Matthew Bucksbaum.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; his two children, Madelyn (Allen) Adamson and Louis (Julie): and grandchildren, Aaron (Tanya) and Sydney Bucksbaum and Joshua and Elissa Adamson.
The family extends special thanks for the many years of devoted and loving care given to Maury by Nickson Simeon and all the others who provided care.
Donations may be made to the Maurice Bucksbaum Memorial Fund for Neurological Research, Hadassah, 5341 W. Atlantic Ave., No. 305, Delray Beach, FL 33484.
