Richard "Dick" Thompson, 85, died Sunday, April 9, 2017, at his home following an extended illness.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 12, at First Presbyterian Church, Monticello, with interment in Hopkinton Cemetery with military honors. The Rev. Emory Gillespie will officiate at the services. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Goettsch Funeral Home, Monticello.

Surviving are his wife, Leoda; a son, Craig (Julia) Thompson, Strawberry Point; five grandsons, Matthew (Claire) Thompson, Jared (Leah) Thompson, Mark (Carrie) Thompson, Jonathan Thompson and Christian Thompson; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Don, and wife, Jane; a niece, Kimberly; and great-nephew, Nicholas.

Richard Lloyd Thompson was born July 28, 1931, at John McDonald Hospital, Monticello, Iowa. He was the son of Lloyd Orville and Wilma Katherine Wilson Thompson. Dick graduated from Buck Creek High School in 1948. He then attended radio electronics school in Omaha for a year. He then worked in Oelwein and Cedar Rapids and REM Electric before enlisting in the U.S. Navy. He enlisted with his lifelong friend, Freeman Smith Jr. Dick continued his electronics training and work in the Navy. Dick married Leoda Borden on June 29, 1952, at Hopkinton Presbyterian Church. Following his return from service, he was employed at REM Electric in Monticello. In 1957, he went to work at Collins Radio in Cedar Rapids as a naval inspector. After two years, Collins hired him and he spent the next 21 years there as the manager of a quality audit department in avionics. He retired in 1982 from Collins, but continued working at the Strawberry Point Medical Center in electronic maintenance. His best job in retirement was being a grandpa to his five grandsons.
