Grade Iowa football's win over Iowa State

Whew. On entertainment value alone, this edition of the Cy-Hawk game gets high marks. Iowa rallied from a 31-21 fourth-quarter deficit to force overtime at Iowa State, where it prevailed, 44-41 on Nate Stanley's 5-yard pass to Ihmir Smith-Marsette.

Offense

Iowa racked up 497 yards (6.1 per play) and although it had six rather unsightly three-and-outs, it produced plenty of highlights as well.

The Hawkeyes delivered three drives of 90-plus yards and another – the game-tying possession with 1:09 to go – of 89.

Freshman Ihmir Smith-Marsette pulled in two TD catches a week after fumbling in his first college game. Nate Stanley was 27 of 41 for 333 yards, five touchdowns and no turnovers a week after giving away two fumbles and a pick. And Akrum Wadley carried 28 times for 118 yards and a TD and added four catches for 72 yards and the game-tying 46-yard catch and run.

Defense

The secondary was burned often by Iowa State QB Jacob Park, who hit Hakeem Butler for wide-open TD passes of 30 and 74 yards, the last of which gave ISU a 38-31 lead in the fourth quarter. Park finished 25 of 46 yards for 347 yards and four touchdowns.

ISU totaled 467 yards (6.5 per play). The good: Parker Hesse came up with a game-changing pick midway through the fourth that led to a game-tying field goal and the Iowa defense held ISU to a field goal in overtime.

David Montgomery rushed 20 times for 112 yards and a TD and Iowa had just 3 tackles for loss and 1 sack.

Special teams

New starting kicker Miguel Recinos again delivered, converting all five extra points and his only field goal attempt, from 31 yards.

There weren't any obvious blunders, but Iowa did begin three drives inside its own 10. It just so happens, the offense came through with TDs on all three of those possessions.
