Paul was inducted in the army on September 18, 1942 and served in the Coast Artillery in New Jersey guarding New York City's harbor. Paul then entered the Field Artillery ranks and served in England, France, Belgium, and Germany. Able to speak, read, and write German, Paul became an asset as
translator for the United States Army. He was
discharged on December 29, 1945. Among some of the medals he earned was a marksman M-1 and
machine gun. He achieved the rank of Corporal.
Paul married Mildred Jahlas from Deep River at St. John's Lutheran Church, rural Victor, on April 26, 1943 in a double ceremony with his brother, Arnold, and Mildred's twin, Marie.
Paul and Mildred were blessed with three children:
Allen (Carol) of Shawnee, KS; Sharon (Warren) Pillard of Keokuk, IA; and Shirley (Tom) Brazinsky of Baroda, MI. Paul has seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
