Solon plays for berth in state tournament as Class 3A substate finals on tap Monday
Seven teams will clinch spots in Des Moines next week

CEDAR RAPIDS — Half of the boys state basketball tournament field has been determined. The other half will be figured out in the next two nights.
Class 3A substate finals will be held around the state Monday night. All tipoffs are 7 p.m.
There will be seven games on tap. The eighth substate final will be Tuesday night between Cedar Rapids Xavier and Dubuque Wahlert.
That game was pushed back a day because Wahlert’s girls basketball team is playing Monday at the state tournament.

- Synopsis: Solon, ranked eighth by the Iowa High School Athletic Association, has been a state qualifier 10 times, the last in 2016. Central qualified last season and twice in the previous four years, six times overall ... Solon’s two losses have been to Center Point-Urbana and Decorah. The Spartans beat Davenport Assumption in the substate semifinals (71-51). Assumption is a member of the predominantly Class 4A Mississippi Athletic Conference with Central ... Central beat Assumption twice in the regular season and also lost to CPU. The Sabers have won 10 of their last 11 games, the exception a 68-55 loss to Muscatine, which is playing in a 4A substate final. They beat Marion in a substate semifinal, 54-52, on a pair of last-second free throws ... Guard Tate McCollum leads Solon in scoring at 19.8 points per game. Guard Brady Meadows and forward Hudson Krukow lead Central in scoring at 14.1 points per game each.
