David D. Hornocker, 82, of Hiawatha, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, February 25, 2026, at Heritage Specialty Care in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The family will greet friends from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 1, 2026, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids. Military Honors will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday at the Funeral Home. Burial will take place at Elmwood Cemetery in Minburn, Iowa, at a later date.
David was born on September 21, 1943, in Centerville, Iowa, the son of Dacy and Delores (Johnson) Hornocker. He graduated from high school and continued his education at Grandview Junior College in Des Moines, Iowa, and Kirkwood Community College. David served honorably in the United States Navy from 1961 to 1964 during the Vietnam era. On December 1, 1984, he was united in marriage to Kathren Goldsberry in Minburn.
Throughout his career, David worked in IT for Blue Cross/Blue Shield and Life Investors. Following his retirement, he drove cars for Hertz. He was a former member of Sharon United Methodist Church and was very active in church life. David had a passion for racing cars in the 1970s and 1980s and was a member of the Sports Car Club of America, Des Moines Valley Region. He found his greatest joy in supporting and attending his grandchildren’s sporting events and activities.
Survivors include his stepdaughter, Jill Byrne of Cedar Rapids; his grandson, Jay Collins of Cedar Rapids; his great-grandchildren, Natalie, Elijah, and Isaiah; two nieces, Jeanette Consolver and Jenna Hill; and his nephew, David Michael (Sharon) Hill.
David was preceded in death by his wife, Kathren Hornocker; his parents, Dacy and Delores Hornocker; his twin sister, Rita Hill; his brother, Chris Hornocker; his grandson, Anthony Gibbons; and his stepdaughter, Marilyn Gibbons.
