In the early morning of February 16, 2026, Micheal Dean Backstrom of Denver, CO, departed this earthly life at the age of 65.
Michael Dean Backstrom was born to Robert E. and Mary Ann Backstrom on January 26, 1961 in Sedalia, Missouri. He was raised in Cedar Rapids Iowa with 4 siblings.
Michael Dean served honorably in the United States Army from 1979 through 1982.
Michael was employed by Sears and APAC while eventually making his career as a manager at/with MoneyGram. If you were in Michael Dean’s presence you were in for a good laugh and a great time. Michael Dean treated people the way he wanted to be treated with a smile and a Hearty Laugh.
Michael Dean is preceded in death by his parents, Robert E Backstrom and Mary Ann Ballew, his stepfather Lester Ballew, and Uncle John Cooper. He is survived by siblings Stacie Backstrom (Denver, CO), Anthony Backstrom, Edward Backstrom and Tricia Obannon, Aunts Joyce Cropp and Meinard C. Wright, all of Cedar Rapids. Michael Dean was baptized at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptize Church, Cedar Rapids, under the leadership of Pastor Percy Burt.
A Celebration of Life will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. at Knights of Columbus 909, 1620 E Ave. NE, Cedar Rapids, on Sunday, March 1, 2026.
