The recent death of 18-year-old Saber Bernard is a tragedy that should weigh heavily on us all. Beyond the headlines of Marion’s first homicide of the year, there was a young man who was a beloved son and a student ready to explore life after high school.
When we lose an 18-year-old, we lose decades of potential. It is time we stopped normalizing this violence and start asking what our city is doing to protect its most vulnerable residents. Justice for Saber Bernard means more than just an arrest; it means commitment to the systemic changes that prevent these tragedies in the first place.
