Mohamed “Bob” Hamed
Lakewood, OH
With great sadness, the family of Mohamed “Bob” Hamed announces his passing at age 87 on February 8, 2026. Bob was the beloved husband of Kay (nee Bruzek) for 65 years; loving father of Julie Corder (Scott Kermode), and Michael Hamed; Juddy (grandfather) of Rachel, Jacob, Tyler, and Emma; son of the late Sheriffe and Hussein Hamed; brother of the late Fatima, Emmitt, Abe, Lila, Ishie, Emney, and Doris; uncle of many; Big Brother to James Kiefer for 54 years.
Born in Cedar Rapids, IA, Bob was a longtime resident of Lakewood, OH. He attended Roosevelt High School in Cedar Rapids, received his BA from The University of Northern Iowa and his master’s degree from John Carroll University. Bob also completed professional certification programs at Kent State, Cleveland State and Bowling Green Universities.
Bob touched the lives of many during a long career as an educator, guidance counselor and administrator with the Cleveland Public School system. In the wake of the landmark 1978 Cleveland Schools desegregation order, Bob was instrumental in the creation and management of Cleveland’s present-day school transportation system, serving as director of Transportation from 1985 until his first “retirement” in 1990. He later went on to serve as director of school transportation with the Shaker Heights and Cleveland Heights school systems, finally retiring in 2013. Throughout his career, Bob was known for his kindness, respect for everyone he encountered, and deep sense of integrity.
Bob enjoyed woodworking, camping, sailing, cooking and spending time with friends and family. He was a thirty-year Browns season ticket holder and a devoted fan of Cleveland State Vikings basketball. However, Bob’s favorite pastime was bringing joy and laughter to everyone he encountered. He was a natural leader, but he never led with gravitas, and certainly not through fear or intimidation. He led with a genuine and infectious form of kindness that is easy to write about, difficult to replicate, and seems rarer with every passing day. He led students, teachers, school bus drivers, church members, family, and neighbors. His neighbors at McKinley Place, where he and Kay lived for only a few years, affectionately dubbed him “The Mayor.”
A Celebration of Life will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Saturday, March 7, 2026 at Lakewood Congregational Church, 1375 W Clifton Blvd., Lakewood, OH. Interment will be private. The family will receive friends from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Friday, March 6, 2026 at Berry-McGreevey-Martens Funeral Home, 26691 Detroit Rd., Westlake, OH.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions in Bob’s honor to Bethany English Lutheran Church or the Alzheimer’s Association.
