CEDAR RAPIDS - The answer is Iowa City Regina, Monticello and Union Community.
The question was how many schools from the Gazette area are top seeded in their postseason districts?
The Iowa High School Athletic Association released all district and substate brackets late Monday afternoon. All top-10 teams in the IHSAA’s rankings, also released Monday, were guaranteed to be a No. 1 district seed.
In Class 2A, that includes third-ranked Iowa City Regina (16-1). The Regals are the top seed in District 9 and will play their first postseason Thursday, Feb. 19 against the winner of the Van Buren/Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont district first-round game that will be played Monday, Dec. 16.
The other teams in District 9 are Eldon Cardinal, West Burlington and Central Lee. The corresponding District 10 (9 and 10 make up a substate) has Northeast Goose Lake (14-7) and Mid-Prairie (13-5) as its top two seeds, respectively.
Monticello (14-5) earned the top seed in District 8, with River Valley Conference mate Cascade (13-7) the No. 2 seed. Others in the district are Anamosa, West Branch, Camanche and Wilton.
The corresponding District 7 has seventh-ranked Aplington-Parkersburg as its top seed, with Crestwood second.
Eighth-ranked Union Community (17-2) is the top seed in District 11. Waterloo Columbus is the ‘2’ seed, with Sumner-Fredericksburg, Jesup, Oelwein and Hudson also in it.
The corresponding District 12 is led by top seed Pella Christian.
