The Cedar Rapids Museum of Art has announced the new, temporary exhibit “Art is the Word: Text in Art.”
The exhibit opens Saturday, Feb. 7 and closes Sunday, May 17.
Text has been incorporated into artwork for centuries. Some artists use it as another pictorial element, adding shape, texture or detail to their work. Others use it linguistically to create a narrative or convey a message in their work. No matter how text is used, it can have a huge impact in an artwork.
"This exhibition invites the viewer to consider how text appears in art and the impact it can have,“ said Julia Jessen, curator of collections and exhibitions. ”Text serves many functions throughout the exhibition, becoming an integral part of the works of art on display and providing an additional tool for the artist's communication. Whether supporting other elements in the work or becoming the subject of the work itself, text is a fascinating element of art to explore.“
This exhibition and accompanying educational programming have been made possible in part by a Program Support Grant from the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation, members of the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art and contributors to the museum’s annual fund. Annual educational programming support has been provided in part by Transamerica.
