The word of the day should be balance

The Gazette offers audio versions of articles using Instaread. Some words may be mispronounced.
To Richard Green, new regional president and publisher, of The Gazette.
The word of the day is balance. At the end of the day, most readers simply want fair, balanced journalism focused on our community. If you bring nothing else to the Gazette, bring more balanced reporting.
Over time, the Gazette has become increasingly left-leaning in both its reporting and editorial voice. As a result, many longtime readers I know have canceled their subscriptions. What should be straightforward news coverage often buries the lead behind headlines that emphasize political criticism rather than simply presenting the facts.
I understand that recent staffing changes and cost-cutting have required changes in how stories are covered, and that is understandable. However, the loss of diverse editorial perspectives—particularly conservative voices—has contributed to the perception of a growing ideological imbalance. The constant tone of political outrage has become exhausting, and for many readers, simply too much.
I rely on the Gazette for local news, sports, community coverage, and obituaries—reporting I can’t find centralized anywhere else. Speaking for myself and many friends who still subscribe, all we ask for is balance. Let headlines reflect the substance of the story, not a political narrative. Include a broader range of editorial viewpoints. Focus on fair, factual, community-centered journalism.
Balance. That’s all we want.
