James “Skip” Sherlock, 90, of Iowa City passed away on January 22, 2026 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.
Visitation will be held from 4-6 pm on Thursday, January 29, 2026 at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 am Friday, January 30, 2026 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Iowa City with luncheon to follow. A private family interment will be held at St. Joseph Cemetery.
Skip was born on December 30, 1935 in Cedar Rapids to James K. and Marguerite (Thompson) Sherlock. He graduated from Oxford High School in 1954. He was united in marriage to Myrna Wasson on April 11, 1958 at St. Mary’s Church in Lone Tree.
Skip was drafted into the United States Army where he served for 2 years. Upon discharge, he and Myrna relocated to Iowa City, where they would establish their permanent home.
In 1960 Skip began his 40+ year career at Plumber’s Supply in Iowa City.
In his spare time Skip enjoyed following Iowa Hawkeye sports, golfing and attending his Hy-Vee coffee clubs, most recently at the Iowa City 1st Ave. location. In his younger years he enjoyed league bowling and coaching Little League and Babe Ruth baseball for over 18 years. He served on the Iowa City Little League board and helped to raise funds and construct new dugouts and concession stands. Skip was heavily involved in the relocation of St. Patrick Catholic Church after the 2006 tornado. Most of all, Skip was known for having a good time, enjoying a good laugh and enjoying time with his family and friends.
Skip is survived by his children: Kelly (Brian) Wulf, Kyle (Jennifer) Sherlock, Kerry (Amy) Sherlock and Kevin (Shelley) Sherlock; grandchildren: Brianne (Ray) McCreery, Brock (fiancé Patty) Wulf, Bailey (Ben) Bachelder, Brady Wulf, Chelsea (Weston) Wagner, Austin Sherlock, Andrew Sherlock, Parker Sherlock, Jacob (Rebecca) Sherlock, Emily Sherlock, Delaney Sherlock, Kaitlyn Sherlock and Hailey Sherlock; three great-grandchildren: Everly, Remy and Finley McCreery with another great-grandchild, Baby Bachelder on the way. He is also survived by his cherished nephew and nieces: Greg, Kristen, Lisa, Kathy and Stacey. He was preceded in death by his wife Myrna; sister Susan Sandersfield; son-in-law Brian Wulf and his beloved in-laws Carol and Larry Rutt.
The family would like to thank the staff at Mercy ICU for their tremendous care and compassion.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Regina Catholic Schools or Iowa City Boys’ Baseball.
