Iowa City West won just one of the 11 contested events at Saturday's Mississippi Valley Conference boys swim meet at the Cedar Falls Community Natatorium.
What Coach Byron Butler's team did have was depth. The top-ranked Trojans came away with their first team title since 2022, scoring 371 points. No. 4 Linn-Mar was second with 319 while host Cedar Falls took third with 293.
West's lone winner was senior Hudson Huberg in the 200-yard freestyle. He edged out Cedar Rapids Washington's Peter Wittnebel to get the win. West did have five runner-up finishes. The Trojans were second in the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays. Other silver medalists included Winston Fan (100 butterfly), Nikolai Paulson (500 freestyle) and Ethan Landon (100 backstroke).
Linn-Mar shined in the relays, taking top honors in all three by wide margins. The Lions also saw senior Parker Macho capture the 100 backstroke.
Cedar Rapids Washington senior Andrew Seifert was the meet's lone double winner. He won the 100 freestyle by more than two seconds over Linn-Mar's Rylee Sieren and was even more impressive in the 100 breaststroke, coming home nearly four seconds faster than Cedar Falls' Sam Weaver.
Washington's Wittnebel took top honors in the 500 freestyle.
The next varsity action for MVC schools will be the district meets, set for Feb. 7
