It’s wrong to treat people like this

The Gazette offers audio versions of articles using Instaread. Some words may be mispronounced.
They came with masked faces, they came in the night taking fellow citizens from their homes, they came with weapons and asserted they had the right to kill children.
I worked in an inner Minneapolis city clinic many years ago and ICE tried to arrest a patient. The supervisor of the clinic stood in front of them and told them to get out, they were scaring people in the clinic. She did not have training to ask for a warrant but what she had was a moral compass. A recent encounter with a neighbor caused me great concern. My neighbor stated “there is no ICE in Iowa, they would not come here.” I rebuked her so quickly with a raised voice telling her ICE is here, taking citizens away, targeting people, terrifying families and churches.
I wondered if the woman who said the chaos of ICE is not in Iowa would step up to protect her neighbor, write a letter against war, or speak to a representative about affordable health care.
I participated in the NO KINGS demonstrations, held my sign up high and shouted to the sky “ICE OUT.” I wrote and called my representative to vote for affordable health care, a justice economy and no war. My brother summed up the chaos being imposed by the Trump administration “it is just wrong how people are being treated.”
