What to know: After picking up its first Quad 1 win at Indiana on Saturday, Iowa men’s basketball returns home for one game ahead of the team’s week-long break. The Hawkeyes’ win over the Hoosiers also snapped a three-game skid that began at Minnesota on Jan. 6.
Guard Bennett Stirtz and guard/forward Tavion Banks combined for 53 points in Iowa’s win Saturday afternoon, marking the first time since Jordan Bohannon and Keegan Murray’s 60-point effort against Maryland in 2022 for Iowa to have 25-plus-points scored by two Hawkeyes in a single game.
Stirtz and Banks are the only two Hawkeyes averaging double-digit points this season, with Stirtz leading the charge at 18.2 points per game and Banks recording 10.6 per game.
Now, Iowa faces Rutgers after it lost to Wisconsin in Madison. The Scarlet Knights have struggled to pick up wins throughout Big Ten play this season, and are currently a combined 0-8 in Quad 1 and Quad 2 wins so far.
Rutgers is led by head coach Steve Pickiell in his 10th season. The Scarlet Knights have just two players averaging double figures so far this year: Tariq Francis, averaging 15.3 points, and Dylan Grant, averaging 11.8 points.
“They keep things pretty simple offensively and defensively, which is what makes them be able to play fairly fast. Not necessarily tempo-wise, but they play pretty fast,” Iowa head coach Ben McCollum said Monday morning. “They're a good basketball team. They can put up points really, really quickly. So we'll have our hands full.”
