IOWA CITY — A Davenport man, who was just released from a federal prison for robbing two Iowa City banks in 2014, is now charged for the third time with robbing Hills Bank and Trust in Iowa City last week.
Antoinne E. Davis, 42, formerly of Iowa City, was charged last week with second-degree robbery in Johnson County District Court. According to a criminal complaint, Davis — wearing a face covering and gloves and carrying a bag — went into the bank and told a teller to empty the cash drawer and put the large bills on the counter.
Davis then approached another teller and demanded the contents from another cash drawer and he also grabbed a customer’s cash from the counter, the complaint stated. Davis left the bank with $14,676 but police later found and arrested him.
During a search of his residence, police found a large sum of cash and also collected clothing Davis wore during the robbery, according to the complaint.
Davis, during an interview, admitted to robbing the bank because he needed money to pay off a debt, the complaint states.
Davis was just released this month from federal prison after serving about 10 years of a 13 year sentence for robbing Hills Bank and the University of Iowa Community Credit Union in Iowa City in 2014. He was also convicted in 2006 for robbing Hills Bank in Iowa City.
Both of those were federal cases. In the 2014 case, Davis was convicted of robbing the credit union on July 17 and robbing Hills on Aug. 1, and again three days later on Aug. 4. He admitted to each of the robberies, according to the plea agreement.
In each, he demanded money from tellers and admitted his actions would make “an ordinary person fear bodily harm.” Davis had a getaway driver in at least one of the 2014 Hills Bank robberies.
In the credit union robbery, Davis stole $12,322. During the Hills robbery on Aug. 1, he took $3,224, and on Aug. 4, he absconded with $19,015.
In the 2006 Hills robbery, Davis was armed with a paintball gun and demanded money. He was convicted and served eight years in federal prison.
