Gary Lee Smejkal, 83, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, at UnityPoint Hospice at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids. In agreement with his wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation or services held at this time. A Private Family Graveside Service will take place at a later date at St. John’s Cemetery in Cedar Rapids. Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Marion is assisting the family.
Gary was born on November 2, 1942, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Leonard Sr. and Anna (Lesler) Smejkal. He was a graduate of Washington High School. On June 30, 1962, Gary was united in marriage to Linda Kay Bell at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. To this union, three children were born: daughter, Brenda, and twin sons, Kevin and Kelly. Gary was employed as a Maintenance Foreman at Iowa Steel & Iron Works until the company closed. He then worked for Priority Delivery for many years, until his retirement.
Gary cherished the moments spent traveling with his loved ones. Many fond memories were made during his trips to Minnesota in their motor home, where he took great joy in camping and fishing. His passion for fishing was evident; it was not merely a pastime, but a reflection of his love for the great outdoors and the tranquility it offered. He spent many Saturdays fishing with his son, Kevin. Gary was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church. His spirit and warmth will live on in the hearts of those who knew him. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Gary is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife of 63 years, Linda Smejkal of Cedar Rapids; children, Brenda Lane (Rus Williams) of Quasqueton, Iowa, Kevin (Marcia) Smejkal of Cedar Rapids, and Kelly (Brooke) Smejkal of Ankeny, Iowa; five grandchildren, Christopher (Jordan) Lane and Tim (Syndi) Lane, Madison (Jason) Liebbert, Cole (Alicia) Smejkal, Brylee Smejkal; eight great-grandchildren, Mya, Ava, and Aspen Lane, Isla and Charlotte “Charlie” Lane, Weston, Riggs, and Elsie Smejkal; two brothers, Lenard Jr. (Carol) Smejkal and Alan Smejkal (Sybil Merfeld), both of Cedar Rapids; as well as several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Ben Smejkal; and sister-in-law, Mary Lou Smejkal.
