James “Mike” McMahon, 84, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Wednesday, December 31, 2025. A Celebration of Life will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, with a visitation one hour prior.
Mike was born July 22, 1941, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the son of Chauncey and Mary (Scollon) McMahon. He graduated from Cedar Rapids Washington High School and later earned an associate degree in criminal justice. Mike served honorably in the United States Army. On June 26, 1963, he married the love of his life, Neta Roberts, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, after asking her to marry him every day for three years until she finally said yes. Mike worked at Rockwell Collins for 33 years, holding various positions until his retirement in 1996.
Mike was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who loved nothing more than having his family together — especially when everyone was “under one roof.” He cherished camping trips with his children, teaching them how to ride bikes and later how to drive, and encouraging them every step of the way. He took great pride in his daughters and never missed an opportunity to tell them how beautiful and capable they were. He especially enjoyed sharing coffee with his grandchildren, listening to their stories, and cheering them on in whatever they pursued. That same love of conversation and encouragement extended to his friendships, both lifelong friends and the new connections he made at the Village Co-op.
Mike was a member of the Izaak Walton League and the Midwest Shooting Club and enjoyed target shooting as a hobby. In his younger years, he was also an avid weightlifter. Above all, Mike was a deeply committed father and grandfather, making sure his family always felt loved, supported, and protected.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Neta McMahon; his daughters, Heather (Erik) Langhus, Kerri (Zachary) Richeson, and Kelly McMahon; his grandchildren, Trinity, Lillian, Logan, Elisabeth, and Parker; his siblings, John McMahon and Kate Neff; many nieces, nephews, and cousins; and his cat, Jupie.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Chauncey and Mary McMahon.
Memorials may be directed to the family to be used for a fund established in Mike’s honor.
