Dr. Harold L. Jones Jr. was born in Chicago on August 1, 1936. The Jones family moved to Cedar Rapids in 1969, when Harold started teaching at Coolidge Elementary. He later taught at Washington High School. He received his undergrad degree from Illinois State, master’s degree from the University of Chicago and doctorate from the University of Iowa. He continued teaching at various universities for many years. He succumbed to a short illness and peacefully departed on November 29, 2025 with his wife and family members nearby. His legacy of education touched many people over the years.
Harold is survived by his wife, Kathy Jones; children, Jori Jones, Jeff Jones ( Kim) and Jon Jones (Theresa); grandchildren, Leah Sloan (Justin), Ashley Vogel (Brett), Nicole Jones, Kristin Durbin, Joshua Jones (Tori), Kailee Jones Miranda (Carlos), Ryan Jones (Melody); 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and former wife, Carol Jones.
He was preceded in death his parents, Helen Jones and Harold Jones Sr.; and sister, Claire Edwards (Merritt).
