Beverly (Bev/Dee) Sue (Allen) Haigh, beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on December 15, 2025, while in Hospice at Oaknoll Memory Care in Iowa City, Iowa, after bravely facing a long journey with Alzheimer’s Disease. Bev is survived by her three children and seven grandchildren. Her daughter and son-in-law, Kristen and Wayne Rath, and granddaughter Kaylee Rath and partner Josh Mills, reside in Riverside, Iowa, and grandson Nicholas Rath resides in Las Vegas, Nevada. Son and daughter-in-law, Todd and Heather Haigh, granddaughters Emily and Ashlyn Haigh reside in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Daughter and son-in-law, Kari and Travis Rosen, grandson Caeden, granddaughters Abigail and Addison reside in Franklin, Tennessee. Along with brothers Robert (Bob) Allen and Terry Allen and their families. Bev is preceded in death by her husband of nearly 60 years, William (Bill) Haigh and her sister Patty Miller. Her family will forever cherish Bev’s memory and the profound impact she had on their lives. A family gathering will be held at a later date.
Born on June 6, 1944, at Fort Riley, Kansas, Bev spent her early years in Rockford, Illinois, before moving with her family to Iowa City in 1957. She graduated from City High School in 1962 and went on to earn her Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from the University of Iowa. Bev dedicated her career to teaching and caring for children, beginning at the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital with special needs students, and later at Helen Lemme and Grant Wood Elementary Schools. She retired from Grant Wood after years of inspiring young Kindergarteners.
Bev’s world revolved around family. She and Bill, high school sweethearts, married in 1965 and remained lovingly devoted partners throughout their lives. She valued her children, grandchildren, and husband more than anything else, pouring her love into every moment spent with them. She delighted in swimming with her grandchildren, playing games, crafting, baking homemade birthday cakes—including Kristen’s famous “money cake”—and spoiling them with her endless patience and affection. Known for her warm hugs, gentle backrubs, and compassionate listening, Bev had a gift for making everyone feel seen, loved, and cherished.
Beyond her family, Bev lived a full life with community and friendship. She was a proud member of PEO, served on the Compeer Advisory Board, and enjoyed countless bridge groups, card games, and Sudoku puzzles. She found joy in the University of Iowa Social Club, bowling leagues, and gourmet food groups. Bev loved traveling the world with friends, attending theatre and musical performances, tending her flower gardens, and watching the birds and deer outside her window. Her curiosity and kindness made her a cherished companion, always eager to hear updates and share in the lives of those she loved.
Bev’s legacy is one of compassion, sensitivity, and intentional love. She will be remembered for her gentle spirit, her devotion to family, and the countless ways she enriched the lives of others.
In lieu of flowers, the family graciously welcomes memorial gifts made in her honor to Iowa City Hospice or to the Alzheimer’s Association Iowa Chapter. Cards may be mailed to PO Box 167, Iowa City, Iowa 52240.
