Johnnie Nicholas Altenhofen, 77, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, December 10, 2025, at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids. Services were held Friday, December 12, 2025, at The Legacy Center at Murdoch-Linwood, Cedar Rapids. Inurnment will take place at a later date at Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Johnnie was born September 8, 1948, in Ottumwa, Iowa, the son of Donavan and Genevieve (Berg) Altenhofen. On December 28, 1966, Johnnie was united in marriage to Rita “Jeanie” Weber in Washington, Iowa. He worked for Mid-Continent Bottlers for 33 years, retiring in 2008. Johnnie was a Fairfax Fire Department Volunteer and a member of the 4-Wheel Club in Cedar Rapids and St. John XXIII Parish. He loved buying and selling classic cars and cruising in his cars, especially on the “Tenderloin Trail”. Johnnie enjoyed deer hunting, snowmobiling, traveling in the RV, collecting toy tractors, and gambling.
Survivors include his children, Jerri (Joe) Whitters, Jody (Tami) Altenhofen, and Jackie (Eric) LaGrange; grandchildren, Hannah (Cody) Luther, Adam Whitters, Nick (Makailli) Whitters, Tayler (Cameron Steffens) Whitters, Rylee Whitters, Lynsey (Bryce) Prokop, Matthew Altenhofen, Cameron (Alli Knies) LaGrange, Logan (Alyssa Eilers) LaGrange, Ty LaGrange, and Braedy LaGrange; great-grandchildren, Isla, Liam, Paul, Paisley, and Lieren; siblings, Donnie (Lorene) Altenhofen, Bonnie (Dan) Feight, Bobbie (Cheri) Altenhofen, Terry (Melanie) Altenhofen, and Randy (Laurie) Altenhofen; and brothers-in-law, Paul Linnenkamp, and Robert Lyle.
He was preceded in death by his parents Donavan and Genevieve Altenhofen; wife, Rita “Jeanie” Altenhofen; and sisters, Carole Linnenkamp, and Debbie Lyle.
