Emergencies are more common than you may think and can happen at any time. Many nights, as most of us sleep, families are huddled on a street, watching firefighters douse the flames that have consumed their home.
As executive director of the American Red Cross of Eastern Iowa, I regularly see our volunteers — neighbors from our own community — responding to help these families, providing emergency lodging and other recovery support. The volunteers also offer compassion and hope, which often mean more than the relief and recovery services provided.
Thanks to donations, this kind of care happens every eight minutes, when Red Cross volunteers help someone affected by a disaster in the U.S. — most often, a home fire.
In the last year in Eastern Iowa, the Red Cross responded to more than 200 home fires, helping nearly 750 people. During the holidays, home fire responses spike nearly 20% nationwide due to seasonal risks.
When these emergencies happen, we will be there — because of our generous donors and volunteers, who help in so many ways. Not just after disasters, but also for people needing lifesaving blood, first aid and CPR, and support navigating the challenges of military service.
So, if you can, please consider donating this holiday season at redcross.org. Let’s come together to ensure people have the support and care they need when emergencies strike.
