ANAMOSA — According to Rowan Jacobi, the words in Springville’s final huddle had little to do with X’s and O’s.
“Coach (Christina) Zaruba told us that we had to stop complaining,” Jacobi said. “We were looking at the negatives. You can’t control other people.”
The Orioles controlled the finish.
Class 1A fifth-ranked Springville scored the final 15 points and rallied past No. 10 Turkey Valley, 39-28, at the Rivalry Saturday girls’ basketball event at Anamosa High School.
Bound for the University of South Dakota, Jacobi scored 21 points, 10 in that final, frantic run.
“It was like, ‘Let’s go; we have to do this now,” she said.
Springville (4-0) scored the first 10 points, held Turkey Valley (3-1) scoreless in the second quarter and led 19-9 at halftime.
But the Trojans edged back, had it all square at 24-24 at the end of the third quarter, and led 28-24 with 5 minutes left after a pair of baskets by Bella Stika.
Addison Merritt’s 3-pointer knotted the count at 28, then Jacobi went to work. Her three-point play put the Orioles back in front for good, 31-28, then added three more buckets to put the game away.
Merritt added eight points for Springville.
Stika paced Turkey Valley with 13.
