Iowa’s next game: Either Grand Canyon or Utah Wednesday in Palm Spring, time TBA.
What to know: These are two unranked teams that are 5-0, both having played all five home.
Ole Miss’ signature win to date is 83-77 over Memphis. Iowa has beaten four mid-majors and Xavier, all by at least 19 points.
The Hawkeyes remain the nation’s leader in field goal percentage, at .576.
This starts a stretch of five games against high-caliber opposition. After this game and either Utah or 2025 NCAA tourney team Grand Canyon, Iowa is at Michigan State, hosts Maryland, and plays at Iowa State.
Monday, Iowa Coach Ben McCollum said this about Ole Miss: “They’ll change defenses a lot. They'll change defenses a lot. They'll use a lot of variety of zones and whatnot, kind of soft presses. They play extremely hard, very competitive and extremely talented. I'm well aware of a lot of what they do from an offensive and defensive perspective, and hopefully we can hopefully compete.”
Ole Miss reached the NCAA tournament’s Sweet 16 last season under Chris Beard. Like Iowa, the Rebels’ leading scorer is a senior point guard. Ilias Kamardine of Marseille, France, averages 15.8 points, 5.2 assists and 1.8 steals. Iowa’s Bennett Stirtz averages 17.6 points, 6.2 assists and 1.8 steals.
AJ Storr is a senior guard for Ole Miss who averages 14.4 points. He played at Kansas last season, and was second-team All-Big Ten at Wisconsin the year before.
Iowa 6-foot-10 forward Alvaro Folgueiras averages 12.4 points and is second on his team in assists at 3.2 per game.
“Honestly, that’s probably the main reason we pushed for him (when Folgueiras was in the NCAA transfer portal last spring) was because of his passing ability,” McCollum said. “We weren’t totally sure, defensively, where he’d be at. He’s actually a really good defender.
“But from a passing perspective, that’s honestly the thing I think was very undervalued when we ended up pursuing him and ultimately being able to coach him.”
