Francis Anthony Fortman, 86, of Manchester, Iowa, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, November 8, 2025. He was born on November 30, 1938, the son of Albert and Emma (Scherbring) Fortman of Greeley. Francis was raised and educated in the Oneida area. He enlisted in the United States Army at the age of 17 and was honorably discharged.
On September 29, 1962, Francis was united in marriage to Mary Holub at St. Stephen Catholic Church in Central City. They were blessed with two children and shared 63 years together. Francis worked most of his life for the Delaware County Secondary Road Department. After his retirement from the County, he worked for Runde Auto Group in Manchester.
In his younger years Francis enjoyed going dancing with Mary. Francis enjoyed time at the casino, and time with friends. He was especially proud of his lawn and flower garden. Above all, Francis cherished time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Fortman of Manchester; two children, Julie Williams of Manchester and Michael (Cathy) Fortman of Dubuque; five grandchildren, Dan (Amber) Williams, Tim Williams, Whitney (Scotty) Hall, Michaela (Jordan) Kruger, Maci (Drake) Fortman; ten great-grandchildren; his brother, Omer Fortman of Manchester; and his sisters Helen Wulfekuhle of Edgewood and Lillian (James) Nefzger of Delhi; and several nieces and nephews.
Francis was preceded in death by his parents; his two sisters, DeLain Fortman and Rachel Fortman; brother, Lillus Fortman; sister-in-law, Lois Fortman and brother-in-law, Floyd Wulfekuhle.
Francis believed that “It’s nice to be important, but it’s more important to be nice.”

Mass of Christian Burial: 11:00 a.m., Friday, November 14, 2025 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Manchester, Iowa, with Reverend Gabriel Anderson officiating.
Visitation: 3:00 to 7:00 p.m., Thursday, November 13, 2025 at Leonard-Muller Funeral Home in Manchester, Iowa. Friends may also call 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., Friday, November 14, 2025, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Manchester, Iowa.
