What to know: Iowa opened with an 86-51 victory over Southern University on Monday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
The high-low tandem of Hannah Stuelke and Ava Heiden was on full display. Heiden, a sophomore, registered 21 points and 14 rebounds while Stuelke (a senior and a preseason all-Big Ten pick) added 20 points and nine boards.
That duo shot 16 of 24 from the floor.
Iowa’s two transfers also were effective. Emely Rodriguez scored 13 points, Chit-Chat Wright nine points and seven assists (and just one turnover).
The Hawkeyes are hosting Evansville for the third time in the past five seasons. The other two games ended in scores of 93-56 and 115-62.
Evansville opened with a 71-66 loss at Southeast Missouri State on Thursday. The Purple Aces were 7-25 last season, which was three more wins than they achieved the previous year.
Freshman Sydney Huber, a Cedar Rapids native, played on two state championship teams in high school, at Xavier in 2022 and at Mount Vernon in 2025. She played 10 minutes in the Purple Aces’ opener.
