What to know: Iowa opened its season with a 101-69 win over Robert Morris in Ben McCollum’s debut as its coach. It was the third time a Hawkeyes team scored 100 points in the first game of an Iowa coach’s era (Ralph Miller, 1965; Lute Olson, 1975).
Bennett Stirtz’s 19 points matched Aaron White for most points in an Iowa debut over the last 30 years. He was one of six Hawkeyes who scored at least 10 points. • Of all active players in the nation, Stirtz is the only one in the top 10 in points (1,637) and assists (438).
If you can’t beat Radford on the road, it doesn’t bode well for trying to do so at Iowa. WIU lost 80-75 to Radford Monday in its season-opener.
The Leathernecks were picked to finish 11th in the Ohio Valley Conference. They have no players back from last season’s 12-19 team.
Junior guard Lucas Lorenzen of Milford, Iowa and Okoboji High School had 25 points at Radford. He averaged 22.7 points and was a first-team NAIA All-American last season as a sophomore for Dordt University in Sioux Center.
WIU starter Antwaun Massey was a 2022 teammate of Iowa’s Tavion Banks at Minnesota Preparation Academy in St. Paul.
WIU assistant coach Bryan Martin was the head men’s basketball coach at Coe College for 12 years.
Of the 11 meetings between the Hawkeyes and Leathernecks, all Iowa wins, none have been closer than 11 points. Iowa won 101-23 in 1944.
No team on Iowa’s schedule is located as close to Iowa City as Western Illinois, 125 miles away in Macomb.
WIU freshman guard Jake Edwards is from Winfield, Iowa, and is the son of former Iowa State player Klay Edwards.
