As a veteran, the increasing politicization of the military is deeply concerning. The oath is to the Constitution, not a political party. The strength of the armed forces depends on an unwavering commitment to the oath, free from partisan influence.
The U.S. is now clearly on an autocratic path. Elected officials of the opposing party are handcuffed. Universities, law firms, news outlets, museums, and civil services are targeted and penalized for not conforming to the current administration’s ideology.
Trumps recent moves have politicized the military, allowing units to directly participate in federal enforcement. Trump has integrated active-duty U.S. military personnel into immigration enforcement and created military zones in multiple states, giving power to search and arrest U.S. citizens.
Our nation founders warned against the dangers of an army turned inward, an instrument of tyranny.
Veteran and author, Ethan Brown explains in Samuel Huntington’s book, “The Soldier and The State,” “Politicization of the U.S. military has undermined public trust in the institution …. It is imperative that the military remains separate and distinct from political process and is resourced by the state for the singulars action against external threats.”
Brown argues that “Use of the military by the state in any form other than justifiable war against external threats is an abuse of this special relationship and violates the sacred trust.
“A Professional military and its members cannot afford to become embroiled in domestic politics, political discourse and the flux of Social discord and values.”
