Cedar Rapids schools are the backbone of our community. They are where future leaders are shaped, where families connect and where the strength of our city is built. On Nov. 4, voters can choose a school board that can restore pride in our schools and confidence in our leadership. I’m running to be sure that it occurs.
I was raised in Cedar Rapids, a product of Cleveland, Roosevelt and Jefferson. My children have and do attend Cedar Rapids schools. I’ve lived the experience of this district from both sides, as a student and as a parent. Professionally, I’ve spent my career in communications and community engagement, work that requires listening carefully, asking tough questions and collaborating to find solutions. These are the precise skills a school board member must bring to the table.
Trust is the foundation of any successful district, and right now, too many parents, taxpayers and even educators feel it’s lacking. It’s troubling that some who might otherwise support the pending bond issue may vote no because of their trust concerns. The lack of trust is hurting student learning environments. That is why one of my top priorities is restoring open communication and transparency. Every family and taxpayer should be able to know how decisions are made, and dollars are spent. Parents deserve a strong voice in shaping the future of their schools.
I believe in investing in our schools. That means updating facilities for safety, accessibility and modern learning, while being mindful of taxpayer dollars. It’s ensuring students have access to strong academics, world languages, fine arts and career training. These programs not only enrich learning but also attract families to our district. The Cedar Rapids district finds itself in a competition for students. We must make it a district of choice for both families and educators. Quality facilities and robust program offerings are critical.
At the heart of all this is student success. Teachers and staff need the tools and support to focus on student learning, not behavioral interruptions. Teachers need to be able to invest their time in students – preparing them to graduate ready for college, careers and community leadership.
On Nov. 4, I ask for your vote. Together, we’ll renew excellence, rebuild trust and make Cedar Rapids schools a point of pride for our community.
Scott Drzycimski is a candidate for Cedar Rapids school board District 2.
